Table Etiquette

The prospect of a formal meal in terms of etiquette can be quite daunting in these times of laptop dinners and fast food so we have put together a handy guide to ensure that your wedding breakfast runs smoothly.
Once seated you should unfold your napkin and place it on your lap. This should remain in place throughout the meal unless you need to temporarily leave the room in which case you should leave it on your seat. This informs the waiter that you will be returning and that your place at the table should not yet be cleared. At the end of the meal you should leave your napkin in a tidy folded state on the table.

Your table will be set with a beverage glass to the right of your place setting and a side plate on the left. There will probably be a number of knives and forks with the forks on the left and the knives and spoons on the right all facing inwards. The rule is to work from the outside in towards your plate as each course is served. Dessert cutlery will be at the top of t...

What is the role of a Toast Master

The Toastmaster will be the person that you have assigned to the task of proposing the toasts and introducing the speakers at your wedding breakfast.
The idea of proposing a toast and the role of the Toastmaster date back to the 17th century where they first appeared at Royal and formal social events.

The role of Toastmaster will be to act as Master of Ceremonies so it is important to select a member of the wedding party who is most likely to both remain clear headed and able to command the attentions of a large group of people with an element of mirth and wit. This duty usually falls to the Best Man.
You may prefer to emply the services of a professional who will be familiar with the correct ettiquette and protocol and who will also be diligent with the smooth running of the reception quietly performing the necessary duties while keeping the wedding party entertained and relaxed.
The main duties will be to ensure that speakers are informed when it is their turn to make a speech...

The History of a Wedding Engagement

Congratulations if you have recently become engaged This will mean the start of a busy few months planning for your special day. Here are some of the origins of traditions and popular beliefs related to getting engaged.
Throughout history the couple in question may not have been the ones making the ultimate decision as engagements were often based on economic or as still happens in many cultures even today religious beliefs and attitudes.
An engagement is the mutal commitment on behalf of both parties to eventually marry. Where in the past is was usual for the man to propose whilst down on one knee many now choose a special meal or visit to a romantic place with some special intimate meaning to pop the question.
One factor in an engagement which has stood the test of time is the engagement ring. The roundness of the ring is thought to represent an everlasting union between the couple and dates back to the ancient Greek Roman and Egyptian times. Initially a ring would have been r...

Wedding Hymns and Alternative Music

The music that you choose for your wedding service will play a vital role in bringing the congregation together to celebrate your special day so it is important that any hymns you choose have meaning and value to both yourselves and your guests. After all there is nothing worse than a church full of people shuffling nervously as they frantically try to recall longlost memories of school assemblies in the hope that the words and tune will come back to them Alternatively you might prefer to use modern or classical music as your theme.
It is important to decide what form the accompaniment will take. Will it be the traditional church organ Will you have a string quartet Will you choose a guitar soloist Certain styles of hymns will lend themselves better to each of the possibilites. For example a more rousing hymn such as Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer might sound better played on an organ accompanied by the church choir whereas Make Me a Channel of your Peace could be sung by a soloist.
The Origins of Wedding Favours

The tradition of giving your guests a small gift or wedding favour dates back centuries and is thought to be associated with the fact that the bride and groom represented good luck. If they then gave a small gift to those attending the wedding it was thought that some of that good luck might rub off on them too.
The earliest favours were almonds which would be elaborately wrapped. Almonds are considered to be an aid to fertility and the Romans would even shower the couple with almonds after the wedding ceremony. In the 13th century almonds were given a coating of sugar and became confetti which they are still called to this day in Italy although they are today more commonly known as sugared almonds.

Favours vary depending on religion and culture but here is a list of ideas both traditional and modern to suit all budgets

dragees basically decorative confectionary

personalised rock

love hearts sweets
